Since I attended the 2010 Opus garage sale, I knew I couldn't miss it this year. U Art soft pastels were the first pastels I ever purchased (from Opus Framing and Supplies). Since it was my first time trying pastels, I decided to buy U Art's because they were cheap in cost. I purchased a 12 pack of Daler & Rowney soft pastels from Walmart for $10. I didn't expect much out of them because they were so cheap, but figured I could use them for background colors so that I could save my Derwent's. I wanted to try something new and decided to create an art series. There are only two in the series so far but more will be coming soon. The basic theme is different girls with a different bug/insect in every piece done in portrait style. Did I mention this series doesn't have a name? I'm stumped! I think it's pretty easy to guess who this is, right? I just started this today and I'm still working on it. Thought I'd post it while I take my quick lunch break. So far this is all done in conté. To blend I used my fingers, blending stumps and a Derwent pastel blender. I prefer to use my fingers after I have used the stumps and blender. I'll post the finished portrait when it's done.

A lot of people see art as something beautiful to be hung in their foyers or in a museum. From abstract to portraiture, we appreciate what is pleasing to the eye. I personally feel that children create beautiful art (and sometimes comical art, afterall, kids are natural comedians). When children create art, they aren't worried about making it just right or anxious that viewers may not like it.

My fiance and I cleared out our second bedroom over the weekend and now it's strictly the "creative room". I traded in my giant plastic storage bins for a storage unit with drawers that not only saves space but also time. Last week I blogged about how I purchased some willow charcoal sticks and sketched my first charcoal portrait (click here to check it out). Here are the latest fashion illustrations I created. The first one was done on a 2'x3' foam board in Prismacolor Colored Pencils and acrylic paint. The second was done in Prismacolor Colored Pencils on layered tracing paper. I find colored pencil a lot easier to blend on tracing paper.
